World Energy Use to Increase 53% by 2035, Despite Facebook Changes

Basically, in the article World Energy Use to Increase 53% by 2035, the writer is saying that based on the statistics that we have gathered, the world will begin to use more and more energy as time goes on. China has become the highest energy consumer in recent years. It is even proven that if it continues to increase at the rate it is now, it will use 68% more than the US by 2035! Despite the aggravations with social networking sites, such as Facebook, the energy consumption will continue to be on the rise. As much as we encourage conservation of energy, it is hard to persuade whole nation into doing so. Countries like China and India are in need of more energy due to their rapid growth in population. In order to lessen the amount of energy consumed, we need to rely heavily on fossil fuels and other alternatives.
In my opinion, i believe that humans as a whole consume way too much energy than necessary. If we began to lessen it only a LITTLE bit each day, the amount of energy used would extremely decrease, future generations would not have to worry about it being a huge issue, and the world would be a healthier place.

q1- Does it surprise you that the US isn't leading in energy consumption? Why or Why not?
q2- What else can we use as alternative energy sources?
q3- Do you think the country would willingly use less energy daily?
q4- What age group do you think is most responsible for the consumption of energy? Will future generations just be worse than we are?

Below is a picture of China's energy sources. Notice how small the "other renewables" section is compared to coal and oil

  1. First of all, I just want to say that it is crazy how rapidly our energy consumption is growing. We all love to use social networking sites, the internet and electricity in general. I might not be able to function without some of these things. We are relying more and more on energy and electricity. Even business people need their iPhones and Blackberrys. Along with many people our age. And I think it is a great idea to lower our energy consumption to just a little bit each day. It could make a bigger impact if more people do it.
To answer question #4, I would think that high schoolers probably use the most energy. This is because we are always on the computers, using our phones, and watching tv.
To answer question #1, I am surprised that China is the leading country in energy consumption. I would have thought that because they have the rule that you can only have one child, they would not have such a large population to accommodate for.

    Opinion:
I found this article to be really relatable to modern times right now! I agree that there probably is way too much energy consumption in the world. To be honest I actually was surprised that the US was not the leading highest consumption of energy. This was a refreshing outlook on things and made me think maybe we aren't doing too bad. Anyways like I said this article was actually really relatable to my own life, mostly because I agree I may be guilty of using too much energy. An example of how I use too much is that instead of logging out of Facebook, I stay logged in from my iPad,iPod, and iPhone all the time. I know this may not be the best idea and if I spent an extra 30 seconds every time to log in and not leave things running I might be able save some energy. And like Val said every LITTLE piece counts!

    Questions of my own:

    1. What are a few things we can do in order to save energy in our everyday lives?

    2. Where do you personally think that you spend the most energy?

    3. What are things that we use everyday, that require energy?

  3. 53% is a crazy amount for our energy consuption to rise! I find it hard to believe that China is the leading country in energy consumption considering they do not have anything like Facebook due to communism. This is a very good article to relate to modern times. Very often i see kids on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc. during class and suring passing time. No wonder why our energy use will double in the next 24 years! To answer question 4, I think that teenagers and young adults are most responsible for the consumption of energy. I think due to the changes in Facebook and with Twitter becoming so much more popular the generations follwing will become worse with energy consumtion.

    Questions of my own:
    1. Why is China the leading country in energy consumption?
    2. What are some ways that we can cut down on our energy use?

Included is a link of the enegry use in the U.S.

  4. I think that 53% engergy increase by 2035 is insane. Not only is it bad for the environment, imagine what we must be doing make that a statistic. I also think that it is odd that China is the highest country as far as energy consumption, not only do they not have the ability to use Facebook, like Tal said, but they are always boasting about how they have all of these great alaternatives to wasting elctricity.

To answer question number 2 I think that we could use things that we can quickly grow back, like corn or other plants that can double as gases. To answer question 3 I do not think that the country as a whole would be willing to cut back on the amount of energy that we use. I say this because I think some people would go insane if they couldn't check there Facebook account every 5 minutes or Tweet someone every time they do something they consider to be monumental.

What I would like to know is, what makes China the top energy consumer?
