Shocking Revelation: EPA Declares 'Fracking May Be To Blame For Causing Groundwater Pollution'

by Kyle Taylor
To sum up the article, the EPA has found chemicals found in fracking polluting our water sources here in the US. The pollution that has entered our ground water now will most likely be there and not be able to be distilled for years or even decades. In Pavillion, WY, contaminants had just showed up in citizens wells in the past few years. Nothing has changed in the area except the new process of fracking. Although they don't want to realize it, the only thing that is polluting their water is the contaminants assoiciated with fracking.

Fracking is a smart idea but it should not be harming a communities water supply. Water is more of a necessity than gas, therefore we should put it first and make sure it is not getting polluted. This is really bad and needs to change soon because if it continues to contaminate our water supply, we will have a water shortage because it is not able to be distilled for years after.

Question-
Do you think this happens in other areas in the US too?
Is this just a problem in the US?
What're your views on fracking?
Is fracking necessary?

  1. I don't think that polluting our water for gas is very smart. I understand that we also need gas, but like Val said we need water more. I also think that pretending that nothing is happening is very wrong. If we are aware of some kind of pollution and we know where it is coming from it should be stopped.

    ANSWERS:

    1) I have to believe that it is happening in other areas of the US, simply because we use gas everywhere so it would make sense.

    3) I don't think it is only a prblem here because we use gas everywhere but I think they aren't aware of it in other palces.

    QUESTIONS:

    1) Is fracking really necessary?

  2. I agree with Val, water is our top priority because we need it in order to live. Gas is also a necessity at the moment because it has a foundation that factors many things. However I definitely  do think fracking can be a good idea but, the location they use to do it should not be harming the communities water supply. Rather than fracking I think they should try looking for a way to fix what they have done first (polluting the communities water), especially because the article mentioned if the contaminates continue to go through our water supply , we will have a water shortage because it can not be distilled for years after.I would relate this to my own life by saying, I too would not be very happy if people were fracking  and causing a disturbance in the public water, water that I drink , the same water that WE NEED!

The following link is to a picture of statistics, this picture shows the percentage of people who are against franking in their own town.

-Do you think this happens in other areas in the US too?

+Im sure it does occur in other areas, but maybe they have not tried to do fracking there yet. Or it could be that you can only frack in certain areas to find the proper quantity and quality of gas.

    -What're your views on fracking?

+ like I had said previously, I think it could potentially  be a good idea, but with in the process no one should be in harm. ( contaminated water )

    -Is fracking necessary?

+ I would have to say maybe, like we had heard in class we only have so much time left to use specific resources, we really should be looking for positive ways to get what we need for the future.

  3. First of all, I think this is great article that really relates to class because we just talked about this in class in relation to the natural gas. I also strongly agree with Val and Simal. We really need water. Water is something that we all really need and is essential to life. If we don't have water, than we will not have any life, and therefore, there would be no purpose for the natural gas and fracking. To me, it doesn't make sense. However, we also rely a lot on natural gas that the fracking produces. I know that I, personally, use a lot of resources daily that provide for the things that I like to do. Even using this computer now to blog while it is plugged in, uses natural gas.

Also, to answer question #2, we are not the only country to use fracking for natural gas. Like we talked about in class, Saudi Arabia is doing a large amount of fracking.

#3: I believe that we could probably find other alternative ways to receive our natural gas than to release a lot of pollutants and cause a national and international disagreement.

#1: In this article, it clearly states that there is fracking going on in New York. I do not think that we just have one place in the entire country that fracks.

  4. I agree with Val, we do need water way more than having natural gas. Water is a resource we need to stay healthy, natural gas is just something that is good to have and makes everyday tasks such as cooking easier. Fracking is a good idea but not if it contaminates the water.

    Answers:
    1) Fracking definitely happens throuout the U.S. Contamination of the water may also be happening but it may not be monitored as well as it should be if fracking is going on.

    Questions:
1)Is there a safer way to get natual gas besides fracking?
