Caption: This shows an off-shore wind farm, which emits less fossil fuel than on shore wind farms.
This article talks about how even wind power is creating emissions. Newspapers through out the country are stating that Wind Turbines are emitting 4-14% of fossil fuels. The fossil fuel emission comes from the manufacturing and installation of the turbine. But Treehugger is saying that wind turbines that are off shore emit fewer fossil fuels versus those that are on shore. They are not saying that you shouldn't use wind energy because it is more efficient than regular energy.
I think that this is a shock to most people, it was to me. I have always believed that all alternative energy was 100% good for the environment, I never thought that it could cause pollution. I was also a little shocked to find out that the off shore wind turbines create less pollution than the ones that are on shore. Finally, I was amazed that there are actually off shore wind farms.
QUESTIONS:
1) Are you surprised that wind power actually creates pollution?
2) Do you think other types of alternative energy create fossil fuel emission?
3) Would you still use this after learning that they pollute?
I think that this seems like a really interesting article that educates a lot of people. It really shows a new view on something that we don't normally realize. I think that most of us focus more on the natural gas, and not alternative energy and we never realize that alternative energy sources are not the perfect solution. Thanks for sharing, Bri!
ReplyDelete#1: When I first read this, I was extremely surprised that there was still negatives to the alternatives. I thought that an alternative was supposed to FIX the effects and make it less harmful. However, now that I think about it, it makes sense that there would still be some harms because it can't be perfect.
#2: Knowing that wind turbines create fossil fuel emission, I think all the alternative energies can. I always thought that this was the cleanest form of energy and yet, it is still harmful. And also, going with what I said in #1, it is almost impossible that it can be perfect. So, going by that, I think the other alternative energies cannot be perfect and must still release some fossil fuels.
#3: I think that we don't have a choice about whether we can use these or not. We just need to use what ever is available for our energy source. I believe that I do not use any alternative energy sources in my house. Although, I might be wrong.
My own Question:
Why does the on shore wind turbines produce more than off shore? Why does it matter?
I agree with Tal, this is a very good article that can educate a lot of people. I always thought that alternative resources would help the environment, not create fossil fuel emmissions.

1)I was veru surprised to learn that theis natural energy source creates pollution because I thought it was supposed to help the environment 100%.
3) I think if we found a way to make these resources pollute less, then it would be better when we used them. If we couldn't I think that I would still use it only because it is cleaner than burning coal or oil.
In all honesty I think this article is actually very helpful! This article is taking a view on a topic many people do not pay much attention to. I never really imagined alternative energies could possibly cause a pollution, especially because they are meant to be created so we can avoid pollution! While I don't think I use alternative energy in my home at the moment, I think it is something worth looking in to.
ReplyDeleteQuestions! Questions!
1) Are you surprised that wind power actually creates pollution?
#1: When I first read this, I was totally surprised that even the alternative to the problem wasnt even the best way to go! Its to bad there are still negatives to the alternatives. When i think of an alternative energy source my mind immediatley, believes it is the next best choice to the original source of energy. Therfore i thought it was supposed to fix the pollution issue and make it less harmful. However, I agree with Tal that it makes sense that there would still be some harms because it can't be perfect.
2) Do you think other types of alternative energy create fossil fuel emission?
#2: Once again I agree with Tal, saying that because we now know that wind turbines create fossil fuel emission, It's definitely possible alternative energies can.
3) Would you still use this after learning that they pollute?
#3: I probabley would because even though they do pollute, it's definetley not as much, which is a step in the right direction. I also have to say that we need to use what we can, while we can. ( by the way I thought this question was referring to the future, like if we will use them when we are older )
I beleive that wind power is such a good resource compared to the other ideas thrown out there. it is great to know that these advancements in the energy industry can help our energy crisis and can become dominant energy sources for us when all our nonrenewable rousources vanish.
ReplyDeleteown questions - how does wind pollution compare to other engergy resources such as solar or biomass?
2. What energy source do you find most effective?
3. where is this the biggest problem?
